What Is a Steering Gear?

The steering gear is the mechanism that transmits a turning motion that is applied to the steering column to operate the front wheels, by linear motion of the tie rod mechanism. It is a design of a hydraulic rack-and-pinion with a hydraulic piston in the rack housing.
